Support Groups

Connecting with a support group or mentor is a good way to overcome the isolation you may feel in a nontraditional job.

A support group can provide you with a place to discuss successful strategies for overcoming the challenges and to foster a feeling of community. Support groups are also places for women to learn about job listings, training opportunities and employment or apprenticeship exam-taking tips.

Mentoring

A mentor is someone who can help you succeed in your goals through supporting you in overcoming barriers. Some employers have mentoring programs that match new workers to women on the job.

Mentoring programs:

  • Help lessen feelings of isolation and encourage the sharing of insights based upon years of experience confronting issues faced by women in nontraditional employment
  • Are win-win for women and employers—women can overcome barriers and succeed in their jobs which helps them achieve economic self-sufficiency
  • Employers develop stable and diverse workforces, which translates into increased productivity
